The most popular New Year’s resolution is to lose weight and get in shape. This is reflected in all the sales you’ll find in the stores right now. Almost all of them are offering deals on exercise              equipment and fitness gear. If you’re one of the millions who’ve made this resolution, don’t also become one of the millions who fail. Starting an exercise regimen is a great idea. We can all stand to live a little healthier, and it doesn’t have to require great sacrifice or effort, in fact you’re much more likely to be successful if you make small changes rather than large ones. Read on to learn more.

The very first thing to do before starting is to talk to your doctor. No one should start a new regimen without getting checked out first. Most of us will get the okay, but it’s important to start slowly to avoid both injury and discouragement. If you set a goal to walk 5 miles a day or lose 10lbs in a month, chances are you’re going to be disappointed. Instead, start by simply setting a goal to walk 30 minutes a day or make a few healthy food substitutions. Then from that starting point you can start to increase your goals a little at a time. Don’t worry about getting lots of fancy equipment either. A pair of supportive athletic shoes and some comfortable clothes are all you need to start with. Most phones and tablets come with fitness trackers, but if you are one of the very few who still doesn’t have a cell phone, you can pick up pedometers and Heart Rate Monitors at most stores.

To avoid injury, start by exercising a few minutes a day and slowly work your way up. This is especially important if you’re not used to physical activity. Listen to your body and don’t try and push through the pain. Sometimes it’s best to stop, rest, and get back to it another day.
